Mobile Studio – Why?
Why I Built a Mobile Newborn Photography Studio
If you’d asked me a few years ago whether I’d build a photography studio on wheels, I probably would have laughed….. Yet here we are. After photographing thousands of babies over many years, I kept hearing the same thing from parents. They loved their photographs, but getting out of the house with a tiny newborn felt harder than the session itself.
That was the reason I built my mobile newborn studio. I wanted families to enjoy the same professional lighting, beautiful props and calm experience without having to load the car, time feeds perfectly or worry about being late. Instead, I come to you. My biggest priority was to make sure my clients received the same quality that they would have if they came into my studio. Because lights reflect differently in every space, It hasn’t been an easy process…… But I can honestly say, I love my studio but it does take skill and knowledge to make this set up work, which thankfully I have after so many years experience.
One of the biggest misconceptions is that mobile photography means taking a few photos in your lounge room with natural light. That isn’t what I do. My vehicle is a purpose-built studio. It carries professional lighting, carefully selected wraps, blankets, posing equipment and everything I need to create the same quality images you’d expect from a dedicated studio. The Studio itself is 8m in length and has plenty of room to do family photos inside. We can do typical more fine art portraits or boho theme, where it looks like it’s a bedroom. But because I am photographing at your home, we can also pop outside to a garden / outdoor area as well if you would like a more casual look.
Parents often apologise because the house isn’t perfectly tidy. Please don’t. I promise I’m not coming to inspect your home but these best part about my services is, that I don’t need to even step inside your house! I only need somewhere safe to park and enough room to work comfortably. The focus is always your baby, never your housekeeping.
Every baby is different. Some settle almost immediately. Others like a cuddle, a feed and a little extra time before drifting off. That’s completely normal. I’ve learnt that patience creates better photographs than rushing ever will.
People also ask whether it’s safe. Safety has always been the most important part of my work. Every pose is guided by your baby’s comfort. If your baby doesn’t like something, we simply move on. No photograph is ever more important than your baby’s wellbeing.
The mobile studio has also changed the experience for siblings. Instead of sitting quietly in the studio, they can play, have snacks, watch a movie or spend time with Mum or Dad or grandparents, while I photograph the baby. When it’s time for family photographs, everyone joins in. Of course, they are also welcome to stay inside the mobile studio as well – we have Disney+ and Netflix and even a playstation to keep them busy.
Grandparents are always welcome too. Some of the most treasured photographs I create aren’t the perfectly posed newborn portraits. They’re the quiet moments between generations. Those are the images that often become family heirlooms.
I regularly travel throughout the Central Coast, Sydney and Newcastle, so families don’t have to spend hours driving with a newborn. That extra convenience is often what convinces people to book.
If you’ve had a caesarean birth, travelling can be uncomfortable. Staying close to home makes those first weeks a little easier. You can sit on your own lounge, make yourself a cup of tea and relax while I do the work.
Clients sometimes worry their baby is ‘too old’ because they’re already two or three weeks old. While younger babies are often sleepier, beautiful photographs can still be created. Every session is tailored to the baby in front of me.
At the end of every session I hope parents feel the same thing. Relief. Relief that it was easier than they expected, and excitement to see the finished images. Those first weeks disappear so quickly. My job is to preserve them in a way that feels timeless.
If you’re considering newborn photography and the thought of travelling feels overwhelming, a mobile newborn studio might be exactly what you’re looking for. You receive the quality of a professional studio together with the comfort of staying close to home. For many families, it’s the best of both worlds.
